Sobering 2017 Reading Statistics

a chart with statistics about reading
We all want our young people to read well. As they leave primary grades, their time becomes filled with activities and "intentional" reading for assignments. Class time to visit the Media Center is gradually eliminated in order to cover all of the required curriculum. One of the results is that students, especially those who are reading below grade level, lose the joy they once found in the printed word as younger children. Reading for enjoyment stops altogether, except for those who are "readers." And, sadly, those who left primary grades who already found reading to be a struggle are now in a war with text in the classroom, in the newspaper, and on application forms.

All juniors interested in taking the PSAT need to sign up in the Guidance Office.  The registration deadline is Sept. 21.  No registrations can be done after this date.  THERE IS NO COST for taking the test this year.  The State of Alabama will pay the cost for each junior who wishes to take the test.  The PSAT test date will be October 11 at AHS.  Why take the PSAT?  The PSAT helps students, parents, and guidance counselors get a sense of the kind of work students need to do to prepare for the SAT or ACT, and can also help with initial expectations for a student’s college prospects. Particularly strong scores can lead to recognition by the National Merit Scholarship program, which in turn can lead to more money or other positive interest for colleges. So it’s worth taking the time to do as well as possible on the PSAT!
